Currently at Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (Dynamic Meteorology laboratory) at Ecole Polytechnique, JMH is Directeur de Recherche (Senior researcher) at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (French National Center for Scientific Research).

JMH graduated from Ecole Centrale (Engineer diploma in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer) in 1983. He then got a PhD in experimental and theoretical molecular spectroscopy in 1986 and was hired the same year on a permanent position at CNRS.

JMH’s main activities are/have been in the fields of:

  1. molecular spectroscopy, focusing on the effects of intermolecular collisions (of pressure) on absorption spectra of molecular gases, a topic on which he co-authored a book published in 2008 [J-M Hartmann, C. Boulet, D. Robert. Collisional effects on molecular spectra: Laboratory experiments and models, consequences for applications. Elsevier; Amsterdam (2000)]
  2. remote sensing of atmospheres in which spectra are used to retrieve some geophysical information such as vertical profiles of species, pressure, temperature
  3. molecular alignment/orientation with a focus on the collisional dissipation of field free laser-induced alignment and of the optically induced centrifugation of molecules
  4. probing porous materials by optical techniques based on the effects of the confinement of molecular gases on their spectra.

These subjects are mainly treated from the theoretical point of view but JMH also carries (has carried) experiments in spectroscopy using lasers and spectrometers.
